Overview
Our modern lifestyles and work deadlines often leave us physically drained and mentally stressed out. Music, especially classical music, has a powerful– almost magical – ability to transport us to a sublime state. India has a particularly rich tradition of highly sophisticated classical music forms that have come down through the ages. Listening to and appreciating Indian classical music can be a particularly rewarding and transcendental experience.
Many of us have a cursory understanding of these traditions, however, seeking true engagement and pleasure from Indian classical music does require some initiation and active effort from the listener. Furthermore, most discussions on Indian classical music center on its academic aspects, and are mainly carried out by theoreticians/musicologists as opposed to practicing musicians. Thus many wouldbe listeners are turned away.

It will introduce the audience to the basic terminology of Indian classical music and its various forms. I had a great time attending Pushkar Lele’s sessions on Hindustani Classical Music (HCM) over the last week. It was a whistle-stop tour of the major aspects of the art form – history, elements that make it unique, the social milieu in which it evolved and key practitioners.
I especially loved the performer and practitioner’s perspective that Pushkarji brought to the art form. I don’t know if anyone else would have been able to teach this course as well. He has the knowledge and articulation of a scholar and the voice of someone who has been practising this art form for over 30 years. I loved the short audio clips that he played to illustrate the forms of HCM and it made me want to go back and listen to more of it. Thanks to Pushkarji and Living Bridge for this course.
The programme met my requirements to understand the basics of Hindustani Classical Music. Well presented and explained with adequate examples. Not more not less.
Sharing the day’s notes would have been beneficial in quicker understanding;but I am none the worse for getting it at the end of the sessions.
Some of the comments on the musicians re. their adopting appellations may have been avoided. Also the presented had a tendency to be repetitive. Can make an attempt to minimise.
I will wholeheartedly recommend to my friends ans anyone else seeking an understanding of HCM. Humongous effort to put this information together. Deeply appreciate it.
The Mentor was 5 star. Outstanding. Superb teaching style, easy to understand, excellent communication skills, and knew his subject very well. Extremely erudite, warm, and a very good teacher.
The Quality of Content . There was a bit too much per session. Difficult to retain so much in each session. Should be less per session and more sessions in the course. The history and lead-up could be shortened, the musical instruments can be avoided altogether. More examples. More breaking down actual recordings and understanding them would help. Less theory more examples. More on Raagas. More time for questions.
Overall experience. Extremely satisfying. Would like to do more under Pushkars mentorship.
I had zero exposure to Hindustani classical music. Having learnt Arabic Classical Music appreciation for 4 years, I had always a desire to understand appreciation of Indian classical music. However being somewhat aware about the diversity and vastness of it, keeping in mind the commercialisation, it seemed a scary task. Especially for the fact that I had no technical guidance of someone who genuinely truly understands all finest details. When I saw the workshop I quickly enrolled but till date I was sceptic and worried since I knew nothing. However within an hour into the teaching I developed comfort. Pushkar sir is the best guide to start your journey. He carefully curated the content so that everyone inspite the diversity of the audience could take it. He ensured that every teaching was conveyed by giving innumerable examples both recorded and himself singing. The workshop gave a very good guiding skeleton so I can set on my journey with best possible guidance. He also suggested a lot of resources books, sites, historical sources, videos to ease the process of understanding. Each concept was very clearly explained. It was a pleasant and highly satisfactory experience that I’ll recommend for everyone, who wish to truly understand Hindustani Art music.
Heartfelt thanks to Living Bridge & Pushkar Lele ji for the great sessions.🙏☺️. It was wonderful to get to learn to appreciate the intricacies about Hindustani Classical Music in such an interesting way!
Always a fan of Pushkar Ji’s divine music and voice. Now became fan of his teaching technique too!
God bless.
The workshop has greatly increased my love and appreciation for Hindustani Classical Music. Am very grateful to the mentor Mr. Pushkar Lele for the very enlightening and interesting sessions conducted with a lot of zest and patience. Kudos to him and Living Bridge. Had a wonderful experience with the interactive peer group as well. Highly Recommended!!!
I’ve been a connoisseur of Indian classical music for over 3 decades. I’ve always harbored an urge to know more about the theory, understand terminologies… This workshop did exactly that, and more. Pushkar Lele ji’s methods, using the right analogies, live recordings, made it easy to comprehend the otherwise complicated structure of Hindustani Classical Music. I recommend this workshop to anyone who has even the slightest inclination towards HCM. The learnings will make it an ‘informed’, and enjoyable experience.
As a member of the audience I have attended many Hindustani Classical Music performances by various artists of different styles and genres. However I have struggled many a time in connecting with the art and the artist as the music just seemed to pass by the ears, without touching the soul in a one way process, simply because I could not understand or identify the many different nuances of the performance.
I had the good fortune to attend a workshop that was just right for me, with sessions happening on weekdays after office hours. The content was superb. A mix of theory and listening to actual recordings with explanations that helped in reinforcing the theory and develop an appreciation for the performance.
Puskar Lele ji our mentor, is hugely talented and immensely knowledgeable and delivered the lectures in a fluid and seamless manner as we moved from one topic to another with very simple explanations demystifying the complexities. Notes provided after the workshop were also detailed and helpful.
This is a one of a kind workshop, that is designed for audiences. So, if you, are like me, playing the role of an audience in a concert, then this is a workshop that you must attend . Thank you Living Bridge and Pushkar ji for a wonderful workshop.
I have been a student of Hindustani Classical Music since 2004 and naturally, I have come across several gurus for the same. Pushkar sir was one of the best gurus on the list! It is quite difficult for an artist to share their own life experiences and learnings with the (virtual) students. However, it was really commendable on the part of Pushkar sir to have imparted his own techniques, understanding, and learnings in HCM to us. When the workshop turns out to be so fruitful, one wants it to be extended for a long time. Therefore, in pursuit of more knowledge from Pushkar sir, I would have personally wanted the workshop to be of at least 7-10 days. 😀
This workshop is highly recommended to all HCM aspirants. 🙂
I attended HCM workshop by Sh Pushkar Lele Ji. These 5 days were intense and very deep experience for me(3 hour session/day) . I had some basic prior knowledge about North Indian Classical Music; this class further went deep in to the right content that proved complementary and on top of what prior experience I had. It has enabled me to appreciate further classical sessions more – especially the session on raga was beneficial to me.
The ease of flow and depth of content; the right examples and carefully inserted breaks during sessions were very well thought out. All members I saw enjoying and smiling which is rare to see in online classes these days. Any technical issues were quickly taken care of.
Just a suggestion for further improvement – guidelines if shared in advance with participants in registration email will be very helpful (e.g. to keep video on during entire session which helps us all, and avoiding and eating/drinking etc. during the sessions).
Overall I would recommend this session (10/10 points) in case anyone wants to appreciate and learn Hindustani Classical Music in depth!
The course was very well structured and the nuances were explained by Pushkar Leleji in a very easy to understand manner. Would love to know more about the workshops he will be conducting.
The ony suggestion I would make is if the time spent on the 2nd last topic of the decoram to be maintained during an event and the part about the mindset of current musicians could be reduced and substituted by a little more time spent on the last section with the suggested readings and listenings.
Four days of a deep dive from ground zero and it was well worth it. Pushkar Lele is a passionate lover of music and a singer himself which adds a bit of magic to the class. And the classes are structured to allow distillation of the concepts. I am a long way off from understanding but i am grateful for the opportunity to wet my feet and hope to join more classes in future
The workshop has structured the pices of information gathered over time by attending shows of the Masteros and Legend of the Indian Music. It has showed the depth of the Indian culture and furthered my urge to go deeper and understand the Indian Music and particulary HCM which a important part of our culture heritage. And my regards to Mr. Lele for hs comand on the subject and clarity with which he has conducted the session. Will attend furure workshop, session of Mr. Lele on HCM.
Couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to understanding hindustani art music! Even though it’s a 4 day workshop, Pushkar ji is very patient and manages to field all questions asked of him. The batch is diverse and everyone comes onboard with different levels of engagement with music– it made for a super engaging week and it ensured I have the right tools to learn everyday since!
Thank you Living bridge and Pushkarji for this enriching experience.
This workshop was a boon for a naive person like me who always was a good listener but totally uninitiated to the nuances and intricacies of HCM. This is a wonderfully drafted workshop with talented and most humble mentor Pushkarji at the helm . Within a short span it gives a profound and detailed view of our great HCM . Thanks a million to the team for coming up with a beautiful idea .
If was great experience. Would recommend this for any person who needs to understand the HCM at high level.
The 4 day workshop was an excellent learning experience. The understanding of HCM has long been seen as difficult and complicated. The mentor presented the content in a manner that was not only easy to understand; but also got me to be curious to know more. I would very much like to be part of the Listening sessions a) Dhir-Gambhir Dhrupad b) Khayal within a Khayal c) Thumakti Thumri d) Tapped Tappa. Eagerly waiting for the listening sessions. Also, I do have a couple of friends who are now keen to attend this program. If you could keep us informed on the next program would be helpful.
I have always been one of those people who admire classical music but have never been able to go beyond the superficial depth. Being a medico Nor have I had the time & dedication to get into learning it full time.
Hence on getting a recommendation of this offbeat course; I joined in with excited apprehension.
The first day itself fuelled the excitement manifold due to the charismatic & open teaching style of our mentor Pushkar lele ji who I later found to be an acclaimed vocalist.
In the next 3 days with the depth of a scholar & calm erudition of an expert communicator; Lele ji guided us beautifully into the enigmatic waters of Hindustani classical music. So much so that in the end despite putting in 3-4 hrs sessions/ day we were left wanting for more.
We started with an overview of the basics of sangeet to classifying music & bursting popular myths on day 1 to a gradually entrancing view of the soul of Ragas. Gradually we moved to understanding Dhrupad, khayal, semi classical styles like dadra, kajri, tappa & finally ending with a touch of instrumental.
I liked the emphasis on actually listening to recordings than solely roting up theory which at times was heavy.
The unique part of the course for me was the finale section of wisdom where Lele ji is quite candid in objective critiscism of HCM interspersed with personal anecdotes that is very insightful.
In the end as he says it so well- for every Tansen there needs to be a ‘Kansen’ afficionado to appreciate it.
& This course might just scratch the surface of HCM in 4 days but it has certainly pushed me towards a quest of being this elusive ‘Kansen’ in the decades to come hopefully…
Thank you for a wonderful workshop. Pushkar ji explains and deconstructs the impossible intricacies of this musical tradition with impressive clarity and humility. As a student of dance, music is a constant presence but it is always good to get to know it better and better. He was succinct and articulate and gave a comprehensive overview of an otherwise massive tradition.
As a novice, enthusiastic about music, the workshop was a steady beginning to learn what Hindustani Classical Music is from the very basics. A clarity in basics definitely helps to explore further. This workshop under Pushkar Lele Jii has been successful in rendering that. Finally appreciating music is more about a journey within. The seeds have been sown. It is time, and exposure to music further, which would determine how I as a person learn to grow a ear for Hindustani Classical Music. However, I definitely recommend this course to any music enthusiast lacking the basics. This workshop with well designed coursework definitely provides an edge over being a novice listener.
I have thoroughly enjoyed attending this workshop. I especially liked the way we were taught about the various forms of Gayaki. My whole experience of listening to these forms have changed considerably after the workshop.
The workshop has also helped me in improving my approach to these forms of Gayaki when i learn it. I think i will be a lot more aware of what i am learning as i pursue my musical journey! Thank you very much for conducting this workshop. It has been an absolute treat and an amazing experience.
Concepts involved in appreciation of HCM were enumerated adequately with lucid explanations and examples. Basics of voice culture could be added to the content for those with inclination for singing. The exposure would enrich a keen listener of HCM.
The workshop has been an enriching experience for me. The patience with which Mr. Pushkar Lele explained each and every details of the syllabus has been exemplary. Truly, I have learnt many things not only about the background history, but also the evolution of music, with an over view of the various types of classical music. Especially the exposition of Dhrupad, Khayal and Thumri have been of great interest to me. As a layman, this workshop has opened my eyes to the vast Ocean of HCM. I would like to attend similar programs, should I get intimations regarding these. Thank You.
I am so glad that I took this course, Pushkare Lele did an amazing job of carefully selecting and weaving together many key aspects of an otherwise vast and endless domain. He presented the material in a very organized fashion giving me a truly holistic picture that exposed me to many different facets of Hindustani classical music. Despite the limitations of an online medium for instruction, Pushkar patiently and effortlessly blended enthusiasm with interesting analogies which speaks so much about his knowledge, experience and above all, skill as a teacher. It was clear from the participant responses that his approach appealed to his audience who possessed varying degrees of subject matter expertise. While classical music remains an ocean, I feel less overwhelmed at the thought of delving deeper into it now and it is safe to say that I am more curious than ever to know more; why, I now find myself listening to so many genres that were explained in class. If you want to expand your knowledge on Hindustani music, I highly recommend this 4-day workshop.
I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop conducted by Pushkar Lele. For an uneducated person in the nuances of classical hindustani music it was quite enlightening learning about the differences between classical and light classical music. Also I finally understood so many terminologies one hears when attending concerts. Of course learning is an ongoing journey and this workshop has put me on the right path. I can now properly appreciate the hard work and the years of practise an artist puts in to make it look so effortless for the audience.
Fantastic workshop…..highly satisfying….
Our mentor Pushkar Lele covered everything about hindustani music , ranging from its spiritual roots, history, types, evolution to its current extent. All this over a span of 4 days (12-14 hours).
He also made it very engaging by actively providing illustrative examples, live demonstrations and activities to experience the theory for oneself , every day.
I heartily recommend this workshop for everyone regardless of age or expertise levels.
Thank You! 🙂
The workshop was a perfect introduction to Hindustani classical music. Pushkar went step by step, patiently teaching us the basics. Thanks for the notes so we can revise and do homework on our own beyond the class.
I would be happy to join the next level class if and when it’s made available.
